Project Overview
The California Avenue Streetscape Project includes improvements between El Camino Real and the Caltrain Station at Park Avenue. The purpose of this project is to help revitalize the street by providing modern street design and amenities that will support the creation of a vibrant pedestrian- and bike -oriented commercial and residential district that builds upon existing public art amenities.
Proposed within the project is a new 2-lane street configuration that provide additional on-street parking; a more comfortable traveled way to be shared between vehicles and bicycles; raised mid-block crosswalks with enhanced pavement and lighting treatments; and new landscaped bulb-out and planting areas. At all-way stop intersections separate turn lanes will be provided to help maintain efficient intersection operations. Decorative free-standing signs, markers, bike racks, and other streetscape treatments will be provided throughout the street.
To help build upon the already unique public art elements of California Avenue new planting areas within the street will accommodate large shade trees to compliment the existing tree plantings. For merchants and visitors, expanded seating areas are proposed throughout the street to encourage casual dining and mingling. At the Caltrain Plaza, new park amenities include expanded seating, information kiosks, and bicycle parking elements will be provided.
